Pixels, proportions and the perfect crop

What image dimensions mean when your wallpaper meets your screen.

Blue Glacier

Dimensions tell the truth

The dimensions on a wallpaper describe the actual source image. A large-looking preview does not automatically mean the image is 4K.

Aspect ratio comes first

A phone is tall and a desktop is wide. When an image fills a differently shaped preview, some edges are cropped. The original download keeps the source file.

More pixels are not always more detail

Enlarging a small image makes a larger file, but cannot guarantee new detail. AI enhancement can also change parts of the artwork. Surfaces keeps unresolved enhancement work separate from the original catalog.

Choose for the destination

For a large monitor, look for source dimensions close to the intended display size. For a smaller phone screen, a portrait source may be the better fit even when its total pixel count is lower.

Preview before setting

Check faces, lettering and the main subject near the edges of the crop. Your device may apply its own zoom when you set a wallpaper.
